About Cohen Meeting Jesus
It is well known that Leonard Cohen became a Zen Buddhist monk, and the influence of Zen on his poetry and music is apparent. What is less well known is the depth and constancy of his Jewish faith throughout his life and work. What is even less well known is how deeply the figure of Jesus touched him and how much he wrote, sang, and spoke about this. That lack of knowledge is what this website seeks to address.
I intend to post every Leonard Cohen poem, song, and quote that references Jesus, as well as some of the more significant ones that reference his Jewish faith. I will also offer a brief commentary on each poem and song that I post. I plan to add a new post about every week or so. I admit this is an ambitious task, and I suspect that my “goal will fall short of the reach” (LC The Goal). But you can help me reach further than I could on my own. If you are aware of songs, poems, or quotes by Cohen that relate to the purpose of this website, please submit them through the contact form. I hope this site will offer a fresh perspective on Leonard Cohen, Jesus and the Jewish faith.
Who I Am
I have spent ten years putting out fires as a firefighter, and now I put out other kinds of fires as an anglican priest in Boston, MA. In my teaching and conversations with people, I find myself more and more referencing Cohen’s work. His sad yet humorous point of view is helpful and refreshing. He has expanded my Christian imagination, and for that I am grateful.
Sincerely,
Dave Friedrich
